CLEVELAND, Ohio – There’s a pretty good chance this time next year will be reminiscing about Foo Fighter’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band released its first album 25 years ago this week, making Dave Grohl (who is already a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer with Nirvana) and company eligible for the Rock Hall’s Class of 2021. Foo Fighters aren’t a sure thing when it comes to being a first-ballot Hall of Famer. But they’re pretty darn close.
We still don’t know what kind of Rock Hall ceremony we will get for the Class of 2020 on Nov. 7 in Cleveland. But it’s hard not to look ahead. In an age when rock music ain’t what it used to be, Foo Fighters have been carrying the torch for the genre during the 21st century.
In celebration of the band’s 25th anniversary, potential Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and all-around awesomeness, we ranked every Foo Fighters studio album (no compilations, EPs or live releases) from worst to best.
9. Sonic Highways
‘The Colour and The Shape’ (1997) Many would argue that if you’ve never swooned along to. Juxtapositions serve as a common motif in both the album’s lyrical and musical composition, with Grohl further describing the album’s overall theme as ’hope and desperation’. Foo Fighters don’t have any bad albums. But a few are average, while still possessing redeemable qualities. 2014 1/4 u2032s “Sonic Highways” coincided with Dave Grohl traveling to eight cities, absorbing each’s musical culture and then recording a song. The corresponding HBO series “Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways” is a fun experience. The album, not so much. Guest appearances from the likes of Joe Walsh, Gary Clark Jr., Rick Nielsen and others feel inspired. Yet, surprisingly, an album looking to capture the wide array of music America offers doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Still, the singles – Congregation and, especially “Something From Nothing” – rock hard in typical Foo Fighters fashion.
8. One by One

*Foo Fighters reconvened for 2011’s Wasting Light, a Butch Vig production that doubled as the official return of Pat Smear, who hadn’t played on any of the band’s albums since 1997. Wasting Light wound up as a smash success for the Foos, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts, going gold in the U.S. And garnering the band another four.
Critics tend to like every Foo Fighters album upon its release, even the ones that don’t age well. “One by One” was greeted with positive reviews in 2002. It’s easy to see why. The album kicks off with what might be Foo Fighters’ most iconic guitar riff on “All My Life.” There are blistering rock tracks like “Low,” “Have It All” and the amazing “Times Like These.” Yet, “One by One” goes downhill from there, considering that those four aforementioned songs were the album’s singles. That lack of energy is especially noticeable when you look at the album in the context of the band’s catalog. “One by One” followed Foo Fighters’ first three albums, each of which could compete for the top spot on this list.
7. In Your Honor
The double album. Hard to pull off even for the greatest of rock bands. Divided into two parts – one featuring heavy rock songs, the other with acoustic tracks – “In You Honor” produces some great moments. “DOA” is a tremendous anthem, while “Best of You” has been a showstopper at Foo’s live shows for years. Even the acoustic side of “Best of You” proves Grohl and company’s worth as songwriters. But, because of its length, “In Your Honor” is inconsistent and one of the band’s least repeat-worthy listens.
6. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
2007 1/4 u2032s “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” followed the lead of “In Your Honor” (and the live album “Skin and Bones”) by mixing hard rock songs with acoustic tracks. Meanwhile, Dave Grohl set out to do a different kind of Foo Fighters album thematically, one that focused on bigger messages about life and society. He accomplishes that. But sonically, “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” sounds like a run-of-the-mill Foo Fighters release, save for a couple big singles and the melodic “Summer’s End.”
5. Concrete and Gold
Foo Fighters’ most recent album isn’t the first time Grohl tackled political themes. But it is the band’s most effective effort in that regard. “Concrete and Gold” is also, perhaps, Grohl’s only successful attempt to push his band out of its usual comfort zone. The album is concise and cohesive. Yet, thanks to the presence of pop music producer Greg Kurstin, the sonic themes are wider-reaching.

“There Is Nothing Left to Lose” was a fitting end to Foo Fighters’ run in the 1990s, given that it marks a turning point for the band. Dave Grohl moves away from screaming, choosing to sing. And the results are stellar. The softer side of Foo Fighters’ frontman produced iconic moments like “Learn to Fly,” “Next Year” and the stunning “Aurora.” “There Is Nothing Left to Lose” is a 1990s pop-rock album that still rocks hard. For some fans, it’s the band’s peak.
3. Wasting Light
If you ranked “Wasting Light” higher on this list, it would be hard to fault you. The 2011 release marked a return to form for the band (Pat Smear was back) while also reaffirming Foo Fighters as the biggest rock band in the world. “Rope,” “Walk” and “These Days” were powerful tracks that decimated tracks by band’s half the Foo’s age. Producer Butch Vig (also back) takes the raw energy of the group’s early albums and rounds it out into the best arena rock album of the 2010s.Foo Fighters 1995 Album Download
2. Foo Fighters
For some, Foo Fighters never topped their debut album. Released in 1995, “Foo Fighters” is essentially a Dave Grohl solo album created as a form of therapy to get over the death of Kurt Cobain and the end of Nirvana. Grohl plays virtually every instrument. Soundwise, “Foo Fighters” is more grunge than post-grunge. Yet, despite its raw feel, the album features sharp rockers with a pop sensibility that reaches its peak on “Big Me.” If you favor subtlety, Foo Fighters’ debut is the band’s best effort. Yet, its weak moments (if you want to call, say, “Weenie Beenie” weak) are just a bit less polished than those on…
1. The Colour and the Shape
“The Colour and the Shape” is Foo Fighters’ first album as a full band, with Pat Smear and Nate Mendel of Sunny Day Real Estate bringing their best efforts to their instruments. But Dave Grohl couldn’t let go of full control. You have to feel for William Goldsmith. Playing drums in a band where the lead singer is also the greatest drummer of your generation is an impossible task. Ultimately, Grohl re-recorded most of Goldsmith’s drum parts. It wasn’t a nice thing to do. Yet, it’s hard to argue with the results. You could make the case “The Colour and the Shape” features Foo Fighters’ three or four best songs. And those songs are landmarks of the 1990s alternative rock, from the off-and-running guitar annihilation of “Monkey Wrench” to the epic nature of “Everlong” to the Kurt Cobain tribute “My Hero.” It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Grohl pulling off the thunderous drum sound on “My Hero.” But where “The Colour and the Shape” beats out every other Foo Fighters album is in the brilliance of album cuts like “February Stars,” “Walking After You” and the closer “New Way Home.” “The Colour and the Shape” proved Dave Grohl was a rock star in his own right, pushing beyond a legacy of being the drummer in the Nirvana.Album Foo Fighters Download Torrent
